Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Home Over the Weekend

The spring market and spring cleaning go hand in hand. There’s something about opening up the windows and getting the house clean—really clean. The words “spring cleaning” can leave us thinking we should take a week’s vacation from our jobs to stay home and clean, but you should never use your hard-earned vacation time to do that. Spring cleaning your home over the weekend is entirely possible and, dare I say, fun. Crank up the music, let the fresh air in, and get ready to do some deep cleaning and prepare your home for a quick sale.

Make a List and a Plan

Choose your weekend, order some pizza on Friday night, and sit down with a pen and paper. Be realistic with your goals and write down everything you need to do. Remember that spring cleaning involves deep cleaning each room and should not be a time to knock down walls and repaint. It’s time to sell, not renovate.

List each room and think about areas that you don’t clean weekly. Then, gather all your cleaning supplies, vacuum, brooms, and rags in one spot for your big cleaning day. Now, get to bed for some rest.

Cleaning Day

Before you begin cleaning, set the tone for the whole event. You’ll need some inspirational music to keep you energized, so get that going. Crack a few windows to allow the fresh air to work its magic and silence your phone to avoid distractions. Today you are a cleaning machine.

Declutter

Decluttering allows you to clean the nooks and crannies in your home. Bedroom closets are a great place to start. While you’re at it, pack up those heavy sweaters. Say goodbye to winter clothing; it’s time for spring!

Continue the decluttering process in places like your pantry and even coffee tables and other surfaces that are collecting too much clutter. Not only will this feel great, but it prepares the home for successful showings.

Wipe Down Surfaces

Tackle your home’s surfaces next. Counters, tables, and any hard surface that doesn’t get cleaned regularly should fall prey to your bucket of warm, soapy water.

Remove all items from one area at a time, wash the surface, then put everything back. This includes the inside of the refrigerator.

Take this time to shine counters and appliances. Window cleaner works well but make sure you use stainless steel cleaners for appliances.

Windows

Remove blinds and hose them off outside. Take down curtains and throw them in the wash. Then, clean the very thick dust off the windowsills and trim. Use window cleaner to clean the glass and wave to your neighbors whom you can now see clearly.

Move Furniture

It’s time to tackle the dust bunnies. Slide furniture aside and get under beds with the vacuum hose to suck those babies up.

Also, lift up couch and seat cushions and send the vacuum in. However, be prepared for what you might find.

Spring cleaning your home over the weekend is quite a workout, but it’s well worth the effort, especially when your home will soon be listed. Remember to put your feet up and reward yourself with a nice cool drink when the cleaning day is done. You’ve earned it.
